A local court here today awarded life imprisonment to two persons for poisoning their close relative to death.

The sentence was awarded by Additional Sessions Judge Rajesh Kumar Gupta to Gangaram (60) and Babulal (40) under Section 302 of the IPC for putting a poisonous substance into the mouth of their close relative Ambaram when he was asleep, prosecution advocate, Santosh Chourasia told reporters.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each of the two.

Ambaram's statement to the police just before his death played a major role in the case.

In his police statement, Ambaram had said on May 25, 2012, both Gangaram and Babulal forcibly inserted some poisonous substance into his mouth. He died in a hospital the next day.

Chourasia said the duo killed Ambaram to settle an old enmity despite the fact that at the time of the incident, his family had been living with Gangaram for 14 years.
