A local court today sentenced two youths to life imprisonment for murdering a retired bank official and looting valuables from his house in 2012.

Special Sessions Judge Satyendra Joshi convicted Anirudhha Patil (21) and Rakesh Pal (23) under sections 302 (murder), 392 (robbery) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) after examining 22 prosecution witnesses.

According to prosecution, the convicts killed their neighbour Omprakash Neriya (70) in Lasudiya area in the city on the intervening night of March 31 and April 1, 2012.

"The duo first injured Neriya by shooting him and then murdered him by smashing his head with stones so that he couldn't be identified. Later, they decamped with his hard cash, bank ATM cards and the key of his house," one of the prosecuting advocates Ratnesh Gupta said.

With the help of the keys, they later opened his house and took away the valuables.
