Police have busted a cricket betting racket and arrested two persons for allegedly placing bets to the tune of Rs 8 lakh on the T-20 match between Australia and South Africa.

Police seized cash worth Rs 1.08 lakh, an integrated call system with 10 mobile phones, a laptop with cordless modem, an LCD TV set, a set-top box and two mobile phones from them after conducting a raid last night on a house near Vambay Colony of MVP Colony area here.

The duo has been identified as S Srinivasa Rao (45) and R Raju (23), who holds a diploma in polytechnic.

"The duo used to browse some websites designed exclusively for the betting purpose. After retrieving the information related to the amount of bet on ball to ball and particular team, they were confirming the same with their counterparts here and in other parts over mobile phones," DCP (Zone I) C M Trivikrama Varma said explaining the modus operandi adopted by the accused.

He said the duo used a software to keep detailed records of rates and bets in order to avoid disputes with punters.

The officer said the bets are placed over phone and cash transactions typically settled within two days after a match is played.
