: Two people, including a functionary of AMMK, have been arrested here for allegedly circulating colour photocopies of Rs 2,000 currency notes, police said Monday.

Saddam Hussain (28) had given a fake Rs 2,000 note to buy a cigarette packet from a shop here, about 185 km from Chennai, the police said.

On suspicion that the note was a counterfeit one, the shopowner raised an alarm and the local people caught Hussain and handed him over to police.

Inquiries revealed that Hussain had procured the note from Alexander, a functionary of TTV Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, and had circulated it on a commission basis, police said.

Alexander and Hussain were both arrested and remanded in judicial custody, they said.

Alexander had allegedly used a colour photocopying machine toproduce the fake notes, they said.

The two had so far circulated such notes with a total face value of Rs 40,000 in the nearby Vaniyambadi market area, the police said.
