Two persons were arrested by ACB for allegedly offering bribe of Rs 2 lakh to a officer attached to Kankavli police station in Sindhudurg district today, police said.

Superintendent of Police, ACB, (Thane zone) Sandip Karnik said that one Sudhakar Parab, a retired police sub-inspector, tried to offer bribe of Rs 2 lakh to the Assistant Inspector (API) concerned who is posted at Kankavli police station.

Parab was apparently trying to give the sum on the behalf of Mahendra Hari Sawant (44), who is Sarpanch of Sangwe village in Kankawli taluka, against whom a cheating case was registered.

"To avoid Sawant's arrest and to give him medical and other benefits in case of the arrest, Parab offered Rs. 2 lakh to the API who in turn approached ACB who laid a trap and arrested the duo while they were handing over the amount to the API, on the premises of the police station," Karnik said.

The duo were booked under offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
