Two held with 28 kg poppy straw in J&K

Two persons were arrested and 28 kg of poppy straw was recovered from their possession in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police officer said.

On specific information that poppy straw was being smuggled, police laid a surprise check post on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway at Banihal and apprehended a truck that was on its way to Punjab from Srinagar, a police officer said.

Instead of stopping the truck, the driver accelerated it and tried to escape, however he was apprehended at some distance, the officer said.

He said that during the search of the truck two bags containing 15 kg and 13 kg of poppy straw were recovered from it.
 

The driver of the truck identified as Onkar Singh and his cleaner Paramjeet Singh, both residents of Punjab, were arrested and booked under various sections of the NDPS act, he said.
