Two Independent MLAs - Julias K Dorphang and John Leslee K Sangma, today submitted their resignation letters to Meghalaya Assembly Speaker A T Mondal ahead of the February 27 election, an official said.

Dorphang, who is behind bars now after he was arrested last year for his alleged involvement in a sex scandal involving a minor girl and charged under POCSO, submitted his resignation through his counsel, they said.

"We have received the resignation letters of Julias and John Leslee today. Their resignation letters have been forwarded to Speaker for information and necessary action," Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons told PTI.

He said 23 out the 60 MLAs have resigned till date ahead of the February 27 Assembly elections.

Sources close to John said he is likely to contest the elections on an NCP ticket.

Attempts to contact them did not fructify.
