Two fishermen were injured when a ship hit their boat about 28 nautical miles off Vadakara coast in the early hours of today, police said.

The injured have been admitted to the Vadakara Government Hospital, coastal police sources here said.

The ship after hitting the boat, which was engaged in fishing, sped away, sources said, adding, the vessel's engine was slightly damaged.

The fishermen replaced the damaged engine with another one which was kept in the boat, sources said, adding, the incident came to light after they returned to shore.

Coastal police have launched a search for the ship, police said.

Over the past few months, suspected hit and run cases have been reported off the Kerala coast. On February 15, a suspected Turkish vessel hit a fishing boat about 22 miles off Ezhimala in Kannur, injuring three fishermen. The collision came hardly a month after a Panamanian-flagged Japanese vessel M V Izumo rammed into a fishing boat off Beypore in Kozhikode.
