Two persons, including a 19-year-old girl, were attacked by a bear and its cubs at a tea estate, near here, police said.

After alighting from a bus, Manivel and the girl, Margaret Zaneena were walking through the estate grounds at Runnimedu last night to reach home when the bear and two cubs attacked the girl.

The man was also attacked when he tried to rescue her, police said.

Some other passengers, who were coming behind, managed to rescue both and scared the bears away and rushed them to the Government Hospital at Coonoor.

The girl has serious injuries on her leg, while Manivel sustained minor injuries on his body, police said.

Forest department officials arrived at the scene and assured residents that action would be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents and also that cages would be placed to trap the animals, police said.
