Two persons were killed when a bridge being constructed over a creek under a Gujarat government highway development project collapsed near Dwarka in the district today, a senior official said.

"The bridge was being constructed as part of the State Highway Development Project (SHDP). A newly-wed couple was passing through the bridge when it caved in, burying them under the debris," said executive engineer, Roads and Buildings department, M R Makwana.

The dead bodies of Gafur Patelia (40) and his wife Kakibai (35), both residents of Mithapur town of the district, have been pulled out from the rubble, he said.

According to an official, prima facie the mishap occurred as the land supporting the foundation of the bridge washed away due to inflow of rain water in the creek.

Work on the bridge was 60 per cent complete when it crumbled.
