Two labourers were seriously injured today in an explosion at the coal-holding section of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) unit here.

A suspected detonator found in a consignment of coal supplied by the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) Gevra mines exploded, leaving two labourers injured, said the Group General Manager, NTPC Korba, Prakash Tiwari.

The detonator-like object was found when the labourers were unloading the coal. It exploded when the two labourers were carrying it away.

The injured men were identified as Sukhram Munda (35) and Bhopal Singh Munda (37), working as contractual labourers for Priya Tech company, Tiwari said.

They were admitted to departmental hospital of NTPC here, he said.

Detonators are used at SECL mines and the investigation into how one landed in coal consignment would be carried out, he said.

Police have registered a case.
