Two lakh devotees take part in car festival

About two lakhs devotees took part in the car festival of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple here today.

The car festival is part of the 20-day Chithirai festivities at the shrine.

Special poojas were performed for idols of Lord Sundareswarar, Goddesses Priyavidai and Meenakshi this morning.

Devotees started assembling at the various streets leading to the shrine as early as 5.30 am.

The 'urchavar' idols of Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Piriyavidai were kept in a decorated giant wooden chariot while Sri Meenakshi idol was kept in another one.

The two cars were pulled by hundreds of devotees. Hundreds of police personnel were deployed as part of security measures to prevent any untoward incidents. The celestial wedding of the divine couplewas held yesterday at "Adi Veethi" where a giant pandal had been put up for the devotees.
