Official sources said a herd of about 40 elephants had come down to a paddy field at Thuramukh from neighbouring Karbi Hills when two of them came into contact with 1100 KV electric wires.

The two pachyderms were killed on the spot, the sources said adding they were buried at the site after post mortem.

Elephants usually come down from the Karbi Hills and Naga Hills in search of fodder in the paddy fields in the region, the sources added.
