Two minor boys drowned in a canal near a village in Krishna district, police said today.

Five boys went to take bath in a branch canal near Avanigadda village last evening when two of them ventured into deep water and got swept away, they said.

The other three boys tried to rescue them but in vain.

Professional swimmers were later pressed into service but the bodies could be fished out only today, Avanigadda Police Sub-Inspector Manikumar said.

The deceased have been identified as B Chandu (14) and K Pandu (14), the officer said.

He added the boys went to take bath without the permission of warden of the hostel, where they were staying.

A case has been registered and investigation is underway, Manikumar said.
