Two minor girls drowned in a pond at Jatadih village in Giridih district today, police said.

Both the girls were sisters and were seven and five year old, police said adding that their father, Laxman Ram was a labourer working in Ranchi.

On seeing her sister Rinky drowning, the elder sister, Raunak rushed to rescue her but she too drowned, the officer-in-charge of Birni Police station Nawal Kishore Singh said.

The children had gone along with her mother Mamata Devi to graze cattle when Rinky rushed towards the nearby pond and slipped into it.

Mamata Devi, who too plunged into the pond to save her two daughters, was also drowning but her sister-in-law with the help of villagers managed to pull her out.

Later, the police with the help of villagers retrieved the girls and rushed to a nearby hospital but the doctors declared them dead, he added.
