In a boost to the ruling Congress in Meghalaya ahead of the February 27 polls, two MLAs resigned today as members of the Assembly to formally join the party soon.

Independent MLA from Bajengdoba constituency Brigady Marak, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from Mendipathar constituency Marthon Sangma put in their resignation papers today, Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons told PTI.

He said their resignation papers were submitted to Speaker A T Mondal, who will take a call on this and necessary notification will be issued.

The ruling Congress claimed that more sitting MLAs will join the party in the days to come, as electioneering in hill state gathers momemtum.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Vincent H Pala said that apart from Brigady and Marthon, three more MLAs will quit as members of the Assembly to contest on Congress tickets.

He said the election committee of the party has also included their names and application forms will be taken to the Central leadership for final approval.

Meanwhile, Keit Pariat, a BJP member from North Shillong also joined the Congress party today with the hope of contesting the upcoming elections on Congress ticket.
