Fishing with use of trawlers will be banned in Goa from June 1 to July 31, a state fisheries department official said today.

The ban, which aims at conserving the fish resources, is likely to affect the operations of about 1,500 trawlers at seven jetties across the state, the official said.

However, the traditional fishing activity without the use of mechanised trawlers will be allowed during the period as it is restricted to shoreline waters, he said.

The fisheries department will seal all the jetties in order to ensure that no trawler ventures into the waters, he said.

An order to this effect has been issued by the fisheries department underGoa, Daman and Diu Marine Fishing Regulation Act-1980.

"The department prohibits fishing by fishing vessels fitted with mechanical means of propulsion and by means of trawl-net and purse-seine net," reads the order.
