City police commissioner E Radhakrishnan said here today that two more State Reserve Police (SRP) companies would be deployed in the city for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival beginning from Friday.
Talking to PTI by phone today, Radhakrishnan said police vigil has been stepped up in the city after an incident of stone-pelting reported from Bavamanpua in Panigate locality of the city late last night.
"It occurred when a group of people pelted stones at a Lord Ganesh procession passing through the area. Another group also pelted stones. This is a communally sensitive locality of the city," he said.
About five police personnel including police inspector J Vaghela were injured in the stone pelting, while two vehicles were damaged.
The police had to lob teargas shells to bring the situation under control. Top police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
