Amidst concerns about the ill-health and malnutrition among tribal children, two more infants died in Attappady area here, health officials said today.

With the death of the two infants, the toll has touched 10 in Attappady, one of the largest tribal settlements in the state, since January.

An infant died at a settlement in nearby Kurukkathaikkallu on Saturday, while another one died on Friday at nearby Palur hamlet, health officials said.

Premature birth and malnutrition of mothers was the cause of death of both the infants, they said, adding both deliveries took place at the hamlets itself.

Last year, a total of 73 children, including newborns, died in Attappady due to malnutrition and other reasons.

Though central and state governments have initiated many relief packages for the well-being of inhabitants here, child deaths are still a major concerns in the region.
