Two youths have been arrested for allegedly cheating hundreds of people on the pretext of revival of their lapsed insurance policies and giving holiday packages on attractive rates, police said today.

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested 27-year-old Asif Kamal, a resident of New Seelampur here, and 19-year-old Kuldeep Kumar, a resident of Etawa in Uttar Pradesh and also recovered 132 cheques of crores of rupees, collected by them from the gullible costumers.

"Kamal and Kumar were arrested for cheating hundreds of persons on the pretext of providing them insurance policies and tour packages with attractive offers," Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav said.

The Delhi Police said that Rajasthan Police had recently registered eight criminal cases at Jaipur regarding cheating with many unsuspecting persons to the tune of several lakhs on the pretext of providing insurance policies and tour packages on very competitive/attractive rates.

Rajasthan Police sought assistance from the crime branch in tracing the accused involved in these cases and it was informed that the accused would promise target insurance policies and tour packages on very attractive rates.

The accused would then ask the customers to send cheques through courier and after getting them realised, they used to change their correspondence address, it said.

Police said Kamal had worked with HDFC Life Insurance company in sales department and he left the job and started his own call centres and used to call the HDFC Life costumers in order to cheat them.

It said Kumar was a school pass out and joined Kamal as a telecaller and used to call the prospective customers with a fake identity and convince them to send cheques at the given address for revival of lapsed HDFC life insurance policies.

Yadav said the two youths used to target policy holders in Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chhattisgarh.

"They used to ask people to send in cheques through courier. They had opened an office near Bhikaji Kama Place here to receive the cheques. They would encash them.

"They used to change their correspondence address after some time," the officer.
