Two persons get jail terms for carrying narcotics

A local court has sentenced two persons to rigorous imprisonment of ten and three years after they were caught here with narcotics in 2010.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (Mandi) P P Ranta yesterday convicted and sentenced Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Kalari village of Bilaspur district here, to 10 years imprisonment and Rohit Gautam of Amritsar in Punjab to three years imprisonment.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.3 lakh on Pradeep and Rs 20,000 on Rohit.

In case of default in the payment of fine by Pradeep, he will have to serve an additional simple imprisonment of one and a half years.
 

The two were convicted under Section 18 and 20 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The convicts were nabbed by the Aut area police team in the Largee Dam area on August 15, 2010. Pradeep was carrying 1 kg and 50 gm charas (cannabis) and 525 gm opium, while Rohit was carrying 100 gram opium.

The prosecution examined 8 witnesses.
