Special Judge B R Kedia sentenced Head Constable Bobby, 33, and Constable Sudhir Kumar Yadav, 43 to jail terms along with a fine of Rs 10,000 each for asking the bus driver to give them Rs 1,500 every month or else his bus would be impounded.

"...It cannot be ignored that cancer of corruption has spread its tentacles in the social life to such an extent that belief of common man in the institutional work is obliterated. The social fabric is destroyed by corrupt practices in the public service.

"Not only that such corruption causes loss of faith in public administration, but it also demoralises bunch of honest officers in the concerned institution. The efficiency in public service would improve only when the public servants exhibit honesty in day-to-day affairs," the court said.

It, however, suspended the convicts' sentence till November 19 to enable them to move higher courts against their conviction and sentence and granted them bail till then.

According to the Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) of Delhi government, complainant Sudhir Kumar had approached it for lodging a complaint against Bobby and Yadav, posted in Lajpat Nagar area here, that they used to demand money for allowing to run his bus smoothly without issuance of any challan.

Kumar's driver had informed him that the police officials used to demand bribe on monthly basis from him for his bus to be plied from Mori Gate to Kalkaji DDA flats and they used to stop him between Lajpat Nagar to Okhla Mandi in March 2010. (More)
