Two sections of the ongoing 72km elevated Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project will be opened in mid this year, an offical said today.

"Two sections of the project -- Miyapur-SR Nagar (11 km) of corridor I and Nagole-Begumpet (16km) of corridor III will be opened in mid this year, HMR Managing Director NVS Reddy said.

Delivering a lecture on "Opportunities and Challenges" to a gathering of young students at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Hyderabad campus, Reddy said "Corridor II up to MGBS will be opened mid next year."

"With many engineering and financial innovations and technological excellence, the (HMR) project is nearing completion. Once completed, it will stand as a testimony to the engineering talent and management skills of our country," Reddy said.

Explaining to the MBA students how the project is different from the other metros, he said HMR is not just a simple transportation venture but it is an opportunity to redesign Hyderabad as an eco-friendly and people-friendly city with special facilities for women, children, senior citizens and differently abled people.

Reddy said systematic planning, clear communication and precast engineering methods helped in securing public support for the project which faced opposition in initial days.

The 72km elevated project, being developed by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), will have three corridors and 66 stations.
