The ruling Congress in Meghalaya suffered a jolt today ahead of the Lok Sabbha elections when two of its senior members in the Garo Hills region joined the Purno Sangma-led National People's Party (NPP).

Former minister Chamberline B Marak and a senior Congress leader Rakman Ch Marak and their followers resigned and formally joined the NPP in Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills district, where former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Sangma welcomed them to the party fold.

The event was significant for the NPP which performed badly in the last Assembly elections.

Chamberline Marak expressed his concern about deteriorating conditions in all respect in the state and in the Garo Hills in particular and felt the need to bring all like-minded politicians and leaders on the same platform.

He said working with a seasoned politician like Sangma would be in the best interest of the state.

The NPP has two representatives in the Assembly of 60 MLAs in the state.
