Two persons were today sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2011 Dumas gangrape case by a Sessions Court here.

Sessions Judge I C Shah awarded life sentence to Jitendra Kumar Singh and Kamal Singh after being convicted for gangrape and fined them Rs 50,000.

They were also convicted under Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the IPC.

The court also directed that the victim be paid Rs 50,000 and her fiance Rs 10,000.

The victim was gangraped by four men on Dumas beach, some 15 km from here, when she and her fiance had gone for a picnic on October 28, 2011. While two accused were held, the other two went absconding.

The court said that legal proceedings would be initiated against the two absconders (Kanaiyah and Rajkumar) whenever they would be caught.

The accused attacked the victim's fiance till he became unconscious before raping the girl.

The four also looted the duo of their valuables and cellphones. The girl and her fiance, who was badly injured later walked towards a village nearby where villagers offered her clothes.

Their families did not register a police complaint fearing social ostracisation. However, Surat police registered a case and arrested two persons soon after.
