Two suicide attempts near collectorate

Two women, who came to the district collectorate for the grievances day, attempted to commit suicide, police said.

A 60-year old woman threw herself in front of a moving bus near the district collectorate, but escaped unhurt as the driver applied brakes in time, they said.

The woman, Ramalath, claimed she was yet to get pension and other terminal benefits though her husband, a clerk in Madukkarai union office, died 15 years ago.

In the other incident, a 25-year old woman tried to douse herself with kerosene in a bid to commit self-immolation proesting arrest of her husband on 'false' charges, but police overpowered her.
