Two swept away in swollen nullah, river in Gadchiroli

A teenage girl drowned, while a man is missing after they were swept away in water bodies swollen with rainwater in Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra, said officials on Thursday.

The girl, Shevanta Ganpat Satpute (18), a resident of Allapalli village, lost her life after getting swept away in a flooded nullah on way to school on Wednesday morning, they said.

Her body has been recovered, the officials said.

Sanjay Kodape (34), a resident of Meddpalli village under Bhamragadh taluka, was swept away by the swirling waters of the Pamulgautam river on Wednesday evening, they said.

He is feared drowned, but his body is yet to be recovered, the officials said.

 

Krishna Reddy, district disaster management officer of Gadchiroli, around 350km from here, told PTIthat Bhamragadh received 120mm rainfall in 24 hours ended 8 am on Wednesday.

"Around 350 people in Bhamragadh have been affected due to heavy rains. Besides, 50 families and 50 shopkeepers from Bhamragadh have been shifted to safer places," he said.

Reddy said the situation is under control and the district administration has taken all precautionary measures to deal with any eventuality.

"Besides, we arein contact with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and disaster management teams in Nagpur in case any assistance is required in affected areas," he said.
