Two men were trampled to death by
wild elephants in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district, an official from the forest department said on Tuesday.
The incident took place near Karaundha village under Pratappur forest range late on Monday night when Sita Rajwade (55) and Chetan Rajwade (58) had ventured into the forest to collect some wood, the official said.
As per preliminary information, the duo had entered the forest despite warnings that a herd of 15 elephants was roaming in the area, he said.
On being alerted about the incident on Tuesday morning, forest and police personnel rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem, he said.
The families of the deceased has been given an instant relief of Rs 25,000 each and remaining compensation of Rs 5.75 lakh each will be disbursed soon, the official said.
Several incidents of human-elephant conflict have been reported in the past from northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts.
