Champa, 45, and Laxmi, 38, both residents of Punjabi Basti in Majnu Ka Tilla, were arrested from Desh Bandhu Gupta road bus stop yesterday following specific inputs, a senior police official said.
They were arrested following a complaint by one Madhav Goswami of Sang Tarashan Paharganj, who reported that somebody had picked his pocket and taken away Rs 50,000, his driving licence and some other documents while he was travelling in a bus plying on route no 721 on July 3.
A trap was laid after police received information that two lady pickpockets would come near DBG road bus stop. At about 6.15 PM, two ladies were found roaming under suspicious circumstances and were arrested, the official said.
"During interrogation, Champa confessed that she was the leader of the gang, which also has two male members, and they used to pick pockets on buses plying on route no 212 and 721. They used to commit the crime during evening when the buses were overcrowded and nobody used to suspect them as they were women," said D C Srivastva, ACP, Central district.
Police had recovered Rs 28,000 from their house. Their main area of operation was between inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) to Karol Bagh, he said.
Their two male associates are absconding and efforts are being made to nab them, he added.
