Actor-director Tyler Perry surprised students in Ohio by showing up unannounced at a school concert and making a big donation to a scholarship fund.

The 'Alex Cross' star was a surprise guest at a music event put on by pupils at the Finland Middle School and he thrilled organisers by handing over a USD 100,000 donation, reported E! online.

The money will go to a foundation set up by teacher Mary Mulvany to fund college scholarships for students from the region's schools, and Perry revealed he wanted to back the cause after seeing the organisation mentioned on TV.

"I want to sponsor as many kids as I can," he said.
