Typhoon Haima causes heavy damage in China

More than 1.69 million people have been affected by Typhoon Haima which also caused economic losses amounting to USD 517 million in south China's Guangdong province.

Typhoon Haima triggerd sudden downpours in several cities, the provincial civil affairs department said today.

The department has received reports of damage to 2,749 houses and some 178,000 hectares of crops.

The estimated damages and economic losses totalled USD 517 million, the department said. The typhoon caused power outages to 2.12 million households.

There have been no reports of casualties following the timely evacuation of 668,000 people to safer areas, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
 

By yesterday, power supply in 95.5 per cent areas affected by the typhoon had restored.
