Twenty-nine families of Chamoli district that lost their homes in the 2013 disaster ceremoniously moved into their new houses, built using quake resistant technique.

A house warming ceremony for these families was held here last evening in the presence of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Anusuya Prasad Maikhuri, district administration officials and representatives of an organisation called SUDHA which oversaw construction of these houses.

Maikhuri also distributed housing insurance certificates among the beneficiary families on the occasion.

These quake-resistant houses have been constructed in Sunali and Jaiti villages about 35 km from the district headquarters at Gopeshwar.

Dinesh Chandra Tiwari, the Executive Director of Society for Uttaranchal Development and Himalayan Action (SUDHA), the organisation appointed by the state government to monitor construction of these house, said even the World Bank has appreciated the manner in which housing projects are being implemented in Uttarakhand.

As many as 549 out of a total of 584 families rendered homeless in Chamoli district are constructing such houses as per the norms set by the state government and 80 per cent of the houses are complete.
