Former chief minister Harish Rawat and his supporters today staged a sit-in against the killing of five farmers in police firing in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district.

They also observed silence to pay homage to the those killed in the incident.

The police "atrocities" against farmers in Madhya Pradesh must be condemned in the harshest of words, he said during a protest on the Ganga river's bank at Har Ki Pairi.

"Atrocities are being also perpetrated on Dalits and the statues of B R Ambedkar are being demolished. Apart from Dalits, Congress workers are also being harassed in BJP-ruled states," he alleged.

Rawat accused the BJP government in Uttarakhand of conspiring to withdraw welfare schemes initiated during his tenure.
