Noting that Uttarakhand lags behind rest of the states in education, Chief Minister Harish Rawat has asked teachers to dedicate all their energy in bringing qualitative improvement in this field.

Addressing a function here yesterday to honour retired teachers, Rawat said despite having the highest number of schools and the best facilities enjoyed by teachers, Uttarakhand lags behind the rest of the states in the country when it comes to education.

"The scenario is disappointing and it must improve. The onus for this rests upon teachers who should launch a sort of drive to bring about qualitative improvement in education so that our students can survive competition from their counterparts from other states," he said.

Expressing his commitment to solve the problems faced by teachers, Rawat said the state government had decided to honour teachers above 75 years of age every year.
