Union Minister Shashi Tharoor today praised the Uttarakhand government for the "exemplary way" in which it carried out rehabilitation work after the mid-June flood disaster.

Tharoor who met state Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna at his residence here said it was heartening to see the rain-ravaged state recovering from the damage caused by the floods.

"The state government has not only conducted the relief and rescue operations in an exemplary way but it also deserves praise for the long-term action plan it has drawn up to rehabilitate and reconstruct the state," Tharoor said.

Uttarakhand has tremendous potential for tourism and fortunately most of the popular tourist destinations in the state have remained unharmed by the calamity, he said.

Bahuguna apprised Tharoor of the steps taken by the state to overcome the effects of the crisis and expressed his gratitude to the Centre for its constant support in rehabilitation efforts.
