CBI Director Ranjit Sinha today appreciated the "very professional job" done by his officers who had probed the 2009 Uttarakhand fake encounter case in which 18 police personnel of the state were convicted for their involvement in the killing of an MBA student.

"It was a criminal conspiracy hatched by the police itself. So our boys have done a very professional job during investigation and also during the trial when we had to secure witness and get their evidence recorded.

"So that way it was a difficult investigation. But we are happy that finally our stand has been accepted by the court," Sinha said.

Ranbir Singh, an MBA student from neighboring Ghaziabad, was gunned down by Uttarakhand Police personnel after being caught at Mohini Road where he and his companions were allegedly trying to commit a crime on July 3, 2009.

A special CBI court has convicted 18 Uttarakhand Police personnel, seven of them for murder and others for various offences including criminal conspiracy and kidnapping in the fake encounter case.

Ranbir's father Raminder Pal expressed happiness over the court judgement.

"I am satisfied with the judgement. Public and media supported me a lot and I also got good support from advocates here," he said.
