A run for unity, pledge taking ceremony and lectures on national unity and integrity are among activities prescribed by the University Grants Commission to varsities for commemorating birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31.
The UGC has suggested that varsities organise a run for unity by students, teachers and staff with the message of "unified bharat".
"The central government observes October 31 as a special occasion to foster and reinforce our dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity and security of our nation by celebrating it as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to commemorate birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel," the UGC said in a letter to all vice chancellors.
"The occasion provides us an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country," it said.
A national unity day pledge making ceremony should be organised and wherever National Cadet Corps (NCC) unit exists, army officers, ex-army officers may be invited to give lectures on national unity, integrity and security related talks, the UGC letter said.
