The University Grants Commission (UGC) will conduct a review the performance of the institutions providing vocational education under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra scheme.

"The Commission has decided to review the institutions approved under the scheme of DDU Kaushal Kendras to assess their performance for further extension or otherwise," an official order said.

Interface meetings with expert committee has been scheduled from May 16 to May 18, and the extension will be granted on the basis of the outcome of the meeting, it added.

Realising the need to boost vocational education on a larger scale, former HRD Minister Smriti Irani had proposed to establish as many as 100 'Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Centres' during the 12th plan period.

The UGC had then renamed the Knowledge Upgradation for Skilled Human Action and Learning (KUSHAL) to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centres for Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (DDU-KAUSHAL).

As per the scheme, all the universities which receive the general development assistance from the UGC and are accredited by the NAAC or the National Board of Accreditation or have applied for an accreditation will be considered for the assistance for offering the vocational courses.
