A senior British Conservative Party politician will not carry out his duties as deputy speaker of the House of Commons while police investigate allegations against him of rape and sexual assault.

Nigel Evans, 55, was arrested on May 4 and questioned about offences that allegedly took place between July 2009 and March 2013. He was released on bail and hasn't been charged with a crime.

The House of Commons said today that Evans, who has served in Parliament for two decades, met with Speaker of the House John Bercow and agreed that he will remain in his post but not chair debates while police investigations are still underway.

Evans has said the allegations against him are made by two people "well known to each other" and are completely false.
