ULFA expels Hira Sarania for contesting polls

ULFA will not participate in the election process as long as the prevailing conflict situation is not resolved, says its spokesperson

ULFA (Pro-Talk) has expelled its former 'Commander' Hira Sarania for contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Kokrajhar (ST) constituency as an independent.

"We have officially expelled Hira Sarania from the outfit for contesting the polls. We asked him not to participate in the poll process but he did not listen, so we decided to expel him from the outfit," ULFA (Pro-Talk) spokesperson Jiten Dutta told PTI here today.

It has been decided the "ULFA will not participate in the election process as long as the prevailing conflict situation is not resolved," he said.

"We will take stern action against any ULFA cadre, residing in the three designated camps, if they exercise their franchise in the elections which also coincides with ULFA's Foundation Day today," he added.
 
"If the conflict is resolved to our satisfaction and even within the parameters of the Indian Constitution, we will definitely show respect for the Indian democracy," he said.

ULFA had in earlier elections in the state played a covert role in extending support to certain political parties and candidates but had made it clear before this Lok Sabha polls that it would in no way be involved and ask its cadre to stay away from the entire process.

The pro-talk ULFA cadre are housed in three designated camps with 96 at Kakopathar in Tinsukia, 28 at Moran in Dibrugarh and 42 in Nalbari.
