A self-styled 'sergeant' of the proscribed ULFA(I) was apprehended in upper Assam's Tinsukia district on Tuesday and explosives were recovered from his possession, police said.

Based on specific input about the banned United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) targeting security forces and vital installations during the current festive season, a joint operation by the Assam Police, CRPF and the Army was launched, they said.

Multiple check posts were set up at Tarani under Pengaree police station and the suspected person was apprehended near Chikarajan area, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Shiladitya Chetia said.

During the interrogation, the person identified himself as Sabdo Asom alias Jonki Borah and revealed that he was given the task to target security forces and vital installations with bombs, the SP said.

Two electric detonators, three packets with about 12 kilogram of explosive such as TNT, two IED (improvised explosive devices) circuits and other items were seized from the militant, Chetia said.

An investigation has been initiated, he added.
