ULFA(I) militants attack stone crusher unit workers, 2 injured

ULFA(I) militants indiscriminately fired upon workers of a stone crusher unit at Namrup in Dibrugarh district, leaving two persons seriously injured.

Police said today that five gunmen with their faces covered came to the stone crusher unit in Namrup last night and started firing on the workers, most of whom were Hindi-speaking people.

In the attack, two persons, identified as Sanjay Bharati and Gopal Sahu, sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.

Doctors have stated that their condition was critical.

"Two persons have been injured in the attack last night. It has been confirmed that the attack was carried out by ULFA(I) terrorists," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S N Singh told PTI.
 

Police is verifying whether another militant organisation NSCN(K) was also involved and jointly carried out the attack, he added.

The police and other security forces have launched a massive search operation in and around the area to nab the culprits.

Meanwhile, in a e-mail statement, claiming to be from the ULFA(I), the outfit took responsibility for the attack.

"We the ULFA(I) is claiming responsibility for the incident of Namrup, Dilighat," said the mail from a person asserting himself to be ULFA(I) Deputy commander (Eastern Command) and Assistant Publicity Secretary Arunudoy Asom said.
