Unaccounted cash, jewellery, silk sarees seized

: Unaccounted cash, jewellery and silk sarees, totally worth Rs 14.2 lakh have been seized since last night by Election officers in Namakkal and Kumbakonam, police said.

In the first instance, 61.68 kg of silver ornaments were seized in salem today from two silver merchants who could not produce any receipt for it. An amount of Rs 8.58 lakh was also seized from three persons in that town, they said, adding the jewellery and cash were handed over to Returning Officers.

A Kumbakonam report said Rs four lakh worth covering jewellery was seized from a vehicle by election officials last night at nearby Ammapetttai bypass. The occupants did not have documents.
 

A total of 73 sarees worth Rs 1.6 lakh was seized from another car at nearby Sakkottai area as those in the car did not have relevant papers, they said.
