Unaccounted money of Rs 49.50 lakh has been seized from a 35-year-old man at the Central railway station here, police said.

Mohammed Fizal, hailing from Malappuram in Kerala, was detained by Government Railway Police last night after he failed to produce documents to establish that the money was accounted and for bonafide purposes. He was scheduled to board a train to Kerala.

Police said they handed over Faizal to income tax authorities for further investigation to ascertain the source of money and its intended use.

A government railway police official said that Faizal had come to Chennai from Kerala to take the money to his state from an acquaintance named Latif.

"He seems to be a courier. Tax men are the competent authorities to probe further," the official said.
