: In a suspected case of honour killing, a woman lawyer was murdered allegedly by her uncle and a community leader for marrying a Dalit man last year and both men were arrested late tonight, police said.

They said the 28-year woman had married her law college classmate and had been living with him for some time. Her parents and brother who came to know about the wedding had called her back to their home at Parthibanur in Paramkudi on September 27 2013 under the pretext of arranging for a formal wedding.

Police said investigations revealed that the woman had come running out of the home that day pleading for help. The next day she was found dead.

Her body was later taken to her uncle's house and burnt there, they said.

Meanwhile her husband filed a missing person complaint with police and also a Haebeas Corpus petition in Madras High Court bench at Madurai.

The Superintendent of Ramanathapuram district ordered an investigation when they came to know she had died. Police who initially registered a case of suspicious death learnt she had been strangulated to death by her father and brother and her body had been burnt by her uncle.

Police said they are on the lookout for the woman's parents and brother.
