The postmortem of Sarfuddin by a panel of two doctors last night found that his liver and ribs were damaged, besides a injury on the body suggesting that he was assaulted inside the jail, official sources said.

DM G S Priyadarshi has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, the sources said.

S S Yadav, one of the doctor who conducted the postmortem, said that damage to the liver could be caused by internal injuries leading to death.

Jail Superintendent R N Upadhyaya said that an inquiry would be conducted at his level and those found guilty would not be spared.

Sarfuddin died inside the district jail under mysterious circumstances yesterday.

Sarfuddin, who was accused of killing his wife, was undergoing treatment in the jail hospital since October 3.

He was rushed to the district hospital after suffering from high fever, vomiting and breathing problems last night but died on the way, Jail Superintendent Upadhaya had said.

The father of the deceased Sukkhi has charged the jail administration with foul play and demanded a thorough inquiry.

Sukkhi said that he had met his son on October 8 and he was not suffering from any problem.
