Undertrial dies in hospital, family cries foul

A 33-year-old undertrial lodged in the district jail here died today at a hospital following illness, with his family members alleging that he was beaten to death.

Wasim arrested in connection with IPC 272 and section 60 of the Excise Act was brought to the jail on Monday evening. He was sent to the jail hospital yesterday as he was not well, Jail Superintendent Brijendra Kumar Singh said.

He was shifted to the district hospital today where he died during treatment, Singh said adding that the body was sent for post mortem.

As soon as the news of his death reached his Patti Paschimi village under Kaant police station area, the locals rushed to the hospital and lodged their protest raising slogans against the district and jail administration, causing traffic jam.
 

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and managed to pacify the protestors.
