An undertrial, who was allegedly involved in a conspiracy to eliminate witnesses in the Amandeep Singh murder case, today escaped from Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here during medical check-up, police said.

A group of policemen had taken Sumit Choudhary, alias Sunny Baba, to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital this morning for check-up in view of his illness, a senior police officer said.

The undertrial gave them a slip and escaped from the hospital. The policemen accompanying him have been detained and are being questioned, he said, adding that they are likely to arrested and also suspended.

Police have been alerted and a massive search operation is on to re-arrest the undertrial, he said.

Sunny was arrested in March, 2011, for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to eliminate witnesses in the murder case of Amandeep Singh.

Sunny had also allegedly killed top Sikh leader Sudershan Wazir, who was actively pursuing Amandeep's murder case.

The conspiracy to kill Wazir was allegedly hatched in the presence of Superintendent of Udhampur District Jail Mirza Saleem Beig inside Kotbalwal jail.

Even money was paid to the contract killers inside the prison. Beigh and another accused Nagar Singh, alias Nago, were also arrested.

The matter came to light after the arrest of Sunny, who was hired by the main accused, Naggar Singh, to kill Wazir.

Police had recovered a semi-automatic pistol, country-made revolver, a German revolver and four live cartridges from Sunny Baba.

Amandeep, son of former National Conference (NC) legislator Dipinder Kour, was allegedly shot by Jatinder Singh alias Raja and Royal Singh in August 2009 inside a barrack of Kot Bhalwal jail here.

Three police officers, including former SSP Jammu, Manohar Singh, are among those who were arrested by the police in 2009 on charges of changing the pistol used in the killing of Amandeep.

Five others, including Jatinder's father Naggar Singh and his two uncles, Ujjagar Singh and Rakesh Singh, were also nabbed for alleged destruction of evidence.
