Undertrial escapes from police custody in Batala

Two men whisked away an undertrial today after spraying a chemical in the eyes of the auto rickshaw driver in whose vehicle the accused person and two constables were travelling, the police said.

According to police officials, the undertrial was being taken to a court when the incident happened.

Harwinder Singh alias Manu, a resident of Rajjo ke Mehma Chak village under Kotli Surat Malhi police station in Batala police district was lodged in the Hoshiarpur central jail in an excise act case, police officials said.

He was being brought to a court in connection with another case by two constables of the Hoshiarpur police.
 

Both constables and the undertrial Singh were travelling in an auto rickshaw, the police said.

When they were about to reach the court, two unidentified men in a car sprayed chemical in the eyes of the rickshaw driver and managed to take away the accused, the police said.

SSP, Batala, Deepak Hilory said that an alert has been sounded in the area to track the three men.
