Undertrial inmate allegedly commits suicide in prison barracks

A 28-year-old undertrial prisoner allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the toilet of a central prison here today, police said.

V Srihari was remanded to prison by a local court on May 18 after he was arrested on charges of attempting to steal from a shop, they said.

He was found hanging from a ventilator grill in the 'barrack toilet' by another prisoner, a police official said.

Prison officials immediately took him to Osmania General Hospital where doctors after checking declared him dead, the official said.

On May 23 he was produced before a court in Mahabubnagar district with regard to another case registered against him for allegedly murdering his mother and attempting to murder his brother, police said.

 

Based on preliminary investigation, the official said the deceased inmate was under depression and also habituated to drinking.

An inquiry has been launched.
